MAHARISHI'S COMMENTARY ON RK VEDA SAMHITA
APAURUSHEYA BHASHYA

Structure of Rk Veda. Let us begin by understanding the structure of Rk Veda. Rk Veda contains 10 chapters or Mandals. Each Mandala contains a specific number of paragraphs or Suktas. For example, the First Mandala contains 192 Suktas; 191 spoken Suktas and 1 unspoken Sukta (called the Avyakta Sukta).

Each Sukta or paragraph contains a specific number of sentences or Richas. The first Sukta of the first Mandala contains 9 Richas. And each Richa contains a specific number of syllables. The first Richa of the first Sukta of the first Mandala contains 24 syllables (called Akshara).

If we look again at the graphic of Maharishi's Apaurusheya Bhashya, we see that these 24 syllables have been divided into 3 groups: Rishi, Devata and Chhandas (indicated by the 3 different colors). These 3 groups are the first three Padas or phrases of the 1st Sukta. Note that on the first line are shown a total of 9 words which are further divided into the 24 syllables shown on the 2nd line.

It will be very good for each course participant to know these 24 syllables in their 3 groups by heart. Rishi group: Ak Ni Mi Le Pu Ro Hi Tam. Devata group: Ya Gya Sya De Vam Ri Tvi Jam. Chhandas group: Ho Ta Ram Ra Tna Dha Tam Am. Click here to see a graphic of these syllables.

Four Levels of Self-Elaboration. Now we will zoom in and look at the details of the 1st Pada. In the flow of Vedic Sounds, each sound 'collapses' into the silent gap, and from the gap a new sound emerges. It is within this silence that the transformation from one sound to the next takes place.

Maharishi's Apaurusheya Bhashya detail

For example, in the first Pada of Rk Veda, each syllable collapses into silence and is transformed into the next syllable: from A to k, from Ak to ni, from ni to mi, from mi to le and so on.

As you can see on the left, in these transformation emerge the following Padas. For example, from A to k, emerges Pada 4. From Ak to ni, emerges Pada 5, etc. Padas 4 to 27 of the first Sukta (Richas 2 to 9) emerge from the gaps between the first 24 syllable of the first Richa. This is the first level of self-elaboration of Rk Veda.
